The story of King Arthur, his round table and the magical Excalibur sword has been around since the 13th century and is another very common slot theme used by providers. I wonder how many slots have been released around this particular story and even if you call it “Sword of Arthur,” they’re all the same.
Thunderkick hasn’t exactly re-invented the wheel with their latest release but as always, I’m going to give it a fair shot. I have my doubts but I’m always hoping to be blown out of the water in a positive way when I try out a new game.
King Arthur and the City of Camelot
Sword of Arthur is packing a 10,000x max payout, very high volatility and a 94.34% RTP. So, let’s make our way down to the legendary city of Camelot and see what kind of tricks King Arthur has up his sleeves.
Graphics – Not Up to Expectations
I’m sure Thunderkick wanted to depict Camelot in the best way and create a magical backdrop to help out and take away some of the attention of a mediocre looking reel setup. Clearly they failed because I don’t see how anyone will be distracted by the view. Let’s just say if it wasn’t for Excalibur appearing on the left, the theme doesn’t exactly shine through.
Where’s Sean Connery?
Weak symbols never help a slot and to be fair, Arthur looks more like Jesus himself than a respected King. To me, the best version of King Arthur was played by Sean Connery and yes, he looks a lot cooler than whoever this guy is.
The helmet and shield are there to enforce the theme but feel weak but the star is of course the sword, which pulls its weight as the scatter. More on that later of course.
But yeah, overall I find the graphics a bit disappointing.

Bonus Boost & Bonus Boost Plus
Right away, you’ll spot the “Bet+” button sitting above the spin button. For players looking for a boost, this is the button you’ll want to activate.
After clicking on Bet+, you’ll be looking at the two options seen above:
- Bonus Boost – Increase your odds of triggering the bonus game with 2x
- Bonus Boost Plus – Increase your odds of triggering the bonus game with 5x
This is where you adjust your bet size and decide whether or not you’re willing to cough up the extra cash to get that extra boost to help you get to the Bonus Game.
I didn’t think the cost was too bad so after just a few failed/winless spins in the base game, I decided to take a swing at the Bonus Boost Plus. When activated, you’ll see it change to the color red.
It’s far from a guarantee that these boosters help, as I’m sure you’ve experienced yourself. However, I am happy to share that it only took me 3 spins with the booster activated before I saw 3 swords appear on the screen.
Sword of Arthur Bonus Game
Once you’ve secured a ticket to the Bonus Game, the sword will tell you if you’ll get 3, 4 or 5 Free Spins. As expected, I was granted the minimum 3 spins but whatever. On top of the number of spins, you’ll also get a special symbol that will help you score multipliers throughout the game.
Expanding Symbols for Multipliers
When at least two of the special symbols, in my case King Arthur, they will expand to cover the entire reel. This in itself will also bring a +1 boost to your multiplier. As long as you don’t run out of spins, you’ll be able to increase your multipliers. I managed to get it up to 5x before it was all said and done.
Btw, if you’re wondering if 3 spins is enough to do some damage, I’d say yes. This is because your counter will reset to however many spins you have whenever you score a win.
Sword of Arthur – Pass or Play?
I had a pretty good Bonus Round, courtesy of some expanding symbols and multipliers. Anytime you have a somewhat successful run, it will sway your opinion of the game itself to some level. This time, it won’t change my mind enough because I think you’ll be wasting your time if you play Sword of Arthur.
In order to make me feel better about it, I’d like to see some more fun features that will add some umph to the game. It looks mediocre, plays mediocre and sends you away feeling mediocre when you’re done.
I appreciate Thunderkick trying to milk a few more coins out of the King Arthur theme but if you are a devoted King Arthur/Excalibur player, I’m convinced there are better versions.
Let me sum it like this: if the Excalibur was as dull as this game, the legend would be over before it even started.
Sorry Sword of Arthur – I’m out ❌
