Russell Crowe will forever be the one who put a face to the word Gladiator after his Oscar winning performance in 2000. It is one of my favorite movies of all time and I’m not alone. With a sequel finally coming later this year, without Russell Crowe of course, it’s going to be very difficult to live up to the hype of the first movie. Starring Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington, you know it’s going to be another great one.
Whether Playtech is trying to ride the wave or not, they just released a slot under the name Gladiator Mega Cash Collect. I mean, any game that has “Mega Cash Collect” in the title should draw some attention from players. However, just like the sequel I just mentioned, it sounds like a challenge to meet expectations.

I was surprised to see how many characters from the movie are in the game. I think you can recognize both Joaquin Phoenix and Connie Nielsen for example. This immediately adds some credibility to the game other than the Colosseum of course. Using the face of Russell Crowe would probably be too expensive so for his character we’ll have to settle for his iconic helmet.
It’s always a bit tricky to mix regular symbols and graphics with more realistic ones from TV or a movie in this case. Whenever you land a big win, you will actually see a clip from the movie, which is fun.
I’m interested to see all the features and how big of an impact they will have on the gameplay so let’s keep moving.

We might as well jump into the most significant feature right away, which is of course the Cash Collect. This is the symbol you want to keep an eye out for.

It will either show up on the first or last reel and when it does, it will collect any coin symbols you have. If you can land two of them, both will collect the cash which means even more money in your pockets.

As you can see, you’ll be looking at a completely different layout in the Bonus Round. Chains and locks keep certain levels off limits but don’t worry, there’s always a solution.
You should know that any Cash Collect symbol on the screen will stick around for the next spin and only move down one position at a time until it falls off.
In my screenshot you can also see a green key symbol. If you combine it with a Cash Collect symbol, it will help you remove one of the locks above. You’ll obviously need more than one key so keep collecting as many as you can in order to open up the grid.

Along the way, there are as many as 5 Power Ups for you to grab. Let me run through them quickly so that you’ll get an idea of what you can expect.
- Green Arrow Up – This will help push your Cash Collect symbols up one step and keep them from falling off
- Dropping Wilds – If this Wild is on the reels when you collect, it will give you extra Wilds with Multipliers
- Cash Spreader – This one looks like a pile of gold coins and will throw out a random number of coin symbols
- Sticky Cash – Here’s a red shield that will double its value for every spin.
- Random Coin – The question mark symbol will stay put for 3 spins and turn into a special symbol every time.

Gladiator Mega Cash Collect – Pass or Play?
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this game to be honest and the first thing I noticed was of course all the characters from the movie. This set the tone and immediately increased my expectations.
It took a little while to figure out exactly how the Cash Collect symbols and all the other Power Ups worked. As soon as the Bonus Round began, it felt like things were moving a bit too fast to really be able to follow the outcome of each spin. It was of course nice to see the levels being unlocked but I think it would have been more fun to actually be able to enjoy each spin a little more instead of everything being out of your control.
There are a few fun features I thought worked well together and I feel that the game is definitely worth experiencing, especially if you’re a fan of the movie like myself.
