Lions Gigablox: An Epic Disappointment, Avoid at All Costs

I think life on the African savanna is pretty fascinating and for some reason, the supposed ruler of it all, is known as the King of the Jungle. Don’t ask me why, considering there’s no jungle, but that’s just how it is and I’m not going to argue with a lion about proper etiquette.

There’s no secret though that the lion has been depicted in a multitude of ways over the years through TV, movies etc. For example, I’m not sure there are a lot of people in the world not knowing about The Lion King.

Yggdrasil is bringing the band back together in their latest release, Lions Gigablox. You’ll come across laughing hyenas, Timon & Pumbaa and I’m guessing a fully grown Simba and Nala.

I’m a fan of Gigablox games but has Yggdrasil managed to recreate the same thrilling action that fans will expect? Let’s find out.

Nothing Out of the Ordinary

You don’t have that much creative room with an African savanna themed slot. Just throw in a couple of Acacia trees, some dry high grass and top it off with an animal or two. Check!

The market is already overflowing with these games so if you’re looking to stand out, you need to do something out of the ordinary. As you can see, Yggdrasil is playing it safe so there’s a chance it won’t get the attention they’re hoping for.

There’s nothing wrong with it, the graphics are fine, it just doesn’t bring anything extra in terms of visuals. The only thing helping the game differentiate itself at least slightly from the rest is the Gigablox symbol, but more on that shortly.

Gigablox – Go Big or Go Home

The gigantic Gigablox symbols will disrupt any reels but I think it can be fun to mix things up. I’m talking about oversized symbols, like the one above, which can reach sizes of 2×2 up to 4×4. In this game, you can expect at least one Gigablox reel per spin.

Exploding Symbols

Some providers call it cascading reels, others are known as Avalanche Reels etc. Yggdrasil simply refers to it as ‘Explosions’. Whatever you know the feature as, the mechanics are the same. Whenever you create a winning combination, all symbols involved will explode and disappear before being replaced with new symbols.

Should the result be another win, you can expect another explosion and a shot at yet another consecutive win. Gigablox symbols are not immune to explosions and are very much involved.

Since I didn’t think the base game was at all entertaining, knowing there Free Spins in play made me take aim at the scatters. In order to get things going, you’ll need to land as many as 5(!) scatters. You will get 2 Free Spins per Scatter landed.

Let me tell you, the savanna is home to multiple endangered species and sure enough, Scatters is clearly one of them. I can’t even tell you how many spins I played without even sniffing 5 Scatters. 

Chasing Lions Gigablox Free Spins – Incredibly Frustrating

You want me to give you a ballpark number? I can tell you it was easily more than 200 spins. It was absolutely ridiculous how impossible it was and the frustration kept building. I really wanted to score Free Spins for you guys so that I could tell you all about the bonus round. 

I understand the bonus round is not a guarantee and because of the Random Number Generator mechanics of slots, you never know how many spins it will take to get there. However, this is a perfect example of why I believe every game should have a Bonus Buy option.  

I would have paid the asking price a long time ago if the option was there instead of playing hundreds and hundreds of spins without luck. I couldn’t believe it!

There’s no way you could have worse luck than me with the Scatters so I’m sure you would find your way to the bonus round soon enough. But just because I wasn’t able to make it, doesn’t mean I can’t tell you about what goes on in there.

During your Free Spins, every cascade will give your multiplier a +1 boost and it does not reset between spins either. You’ll be happy to know there’s no upper limit to how big your multiplier can get so go get it.

Lions Gigablox – Pass or Play?

I think you know where I stand here. There’s no way I will recommend this slot to you or anyone else. It’s an absolute waste of your time and money.  Sure, the Gigablox symbols can be fun for a change but I need a lot more than big symbols.

Not only was it a disaster trying to find enough Scatters to trigger Free Spins but there were no other features to keep my interest alive.

The tough part was knowing I would have to write this review after I was done playing because all I wanted to do was to shut that game down and never look at it or talk about it again. 

Stay Clear

I have to say it’s been a long time since I’ve been this frustrated with a slot and I hope it won’t happen again any time soon. So, take my word for it and stay clear of Lions Gigablox. Unless you’re looking to be riled up, then by all means…
